where did you find the download for Linux Ubuntu?
I have been looking for a good OS system to replace my vista
thankyou
Hi Wheel!
welcome to the world of Linux! My husband has been using Debian (the father distro of Ubuntu. The ".deb" suffix of Ubuntu packages just come from Debian) exclusively for 10+ years. Serious file servers in my company all run Linux. If your graphic card is not too old, you may want to try out the desktop management system Compiz-Fusion:
http://www.compiz-fusion.org/
It is worlds moderner than Windoz Vista's UI or Mac OS X's UI. You will love it, your daughter will love it.
Speaking of your daughter, there are so many excellent free learning software on Linux for her. Animated chemistry/physics labs, animated language teachers, etc. A while ago I learnt how to read the French letters following a Linux toy software.
And, "GNU Cash" is an excellent personal financial management software under Linux:
http://www.gnucash.org/
For multimedia you may want to install mplayer and all its codecs, a gstream frontend is good companion too.
You mentioned you were learning file system....don't know what exactly you meant....End users like you do not have to know details about ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, Ext3, etc. I guess you were talking about the directory structure of Linux. Yes it is quite different from Windoz. You will most frequently need the /home/yourUserName directory. Under this directory, you can organize your personal files as you like. You may also need to get used to manually modifying the file privileges.... just google around when you have any technical questions, there are many extremely resourceful Linux communities.
Have fun with Linux!
Mrs Fay
For Ubuntu wannabes:
Official site of Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
There you can download the latest or older versions of the Ubuntu distro of Linux and access the wonderful world of Linux and other beautifully engineered FOSS (Free and Open Source Software). Btw, Skype has a Linux version, Google Earth has a Linux version, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) under Linux is almost as mighty as Photoshop, InkScape enables you to author professional vector graphics....you will not likely to miss Windoz once you switch! :-)

Wheel or others
Do you use anti-virus program or other cleaning program for Linux?
thankyou for the assistance
My 2 cents for Linux security:
since the Linux ecosystem is basically open source, which means the source code are checked by hundreds of thousands of OS geeks worldwide, security holes are substantially fewer than Windoz's. Malicious programs targeted at the windoz platform do not work under Linux anyway. But you have to use really strong passwords (the password should by no means a meaningful word, should contain numbers and strange symbols, etc.), I have experienced some brute-force password attacks on my Debian box. And, you need to turn on the automatic system update. Linux is not bug free, but usually the problematic code would be patched pretty quickly. Ubuntu does not allow root user, that reduces risk. A firewall in your router is a good guard too. Virus is relatively small problem under Linux, but I've had enough headache from hardware drivers. If your computer has some niche hardware components, or too "ahead of the time", be warned, the limited availability of the driver could be a problem.
Mrs Fay
Mrs Fay,
Thanks for your information! For the drivers, I actually had used some effort to set up the driver for the wifi card in my notebook.
zoe,
thank you very much.

thankyou mrs fay
your information are very helpful
Can you please further develop the followings:
"But you have to use really strong passwords (the password should by no means a meaningful word, should contain numbers and strange symbols, etc.), I have experienced some brute-force password attacks on my Debian box."
Which password are you talking about? pw we have with like online accts or pw for linux?
and i am a computer stupid, what do u mean by debian box? i know u mentioned u husband is using debian (linux OS =p)
Another potential worry i have is my driver support, I have a Fujitus laptop and it comes with a driver disk, do i have to go somewhere to find drivers that support linux or i can just use the disk driver which designed for window visa
P.S. wheel sorry for using your blog as a communication tool with others. Mrs Fay has been very helpful
standard,

kelvin,
Any action affecting the "root" will require input of password e.g. installing file.
You better search the website of fujitsu to check for any driver for linux, older model may be better, driver for newer model may not be available.
I install linux in my vintage IBM X20 and everything is ok.
Hi kelvin,
the password I mentioned was the user password asked in the login screen when your OS boots. Never use the same password for your online accounts and your computer login.
In geek's language the word "box" means a computer. "Get him a new box" means buy a new computer for him. "Debian box" means a computer that has the Debian Linux installed as operating system. Wheel's X20 is a Ubuntu box. (Please do not feel bad about not knowing it, months ago I had no slightest idea about what you financial guys mean by "put", "call", "cover", etc. Remember Google and Wikipedia are our good friends! :-) )
Now to drivers. It does not matter who your computer's vendor is. Important is, whether the components inside your computer are popular enough or not. For components such as TV card or Wifi card, if you know the code of the chipset (let's say, the chipset BT848 is used in many TV cards made by different vendors), you can google for its Linux driver. You are lucky if your Fujisu box has an NVidia graphic card, they have excellent Linux support. More challenging is the installation of some drivers....By all means have a look at here, the article tells you how to deal with your potential driver problem:

My sorry to wheel. I do not mean to use your blog to show off my shallow knowledge. Just want to share some practical information. You've shared so much great information on investing with us, you are my role model! :-)

Mrs Fay and Wheel
Thankyou~~ I just found out I cant dl Linux until December =( as my study program does not support Linux.
1 more question, it seems like I have to dl extra program to install some driver.
oh beside, Mrs Fay are u currently using the accounting program which u recommanded?
I know nothing about Linux. How can I start to switch from Window to Linux?
you may borrow some books about linux (fedora, debian, ubuntu, opensuse, etc.) from library and read them to get some idea before take any change. web is informative but books are more systematic
Just want to share a funny stuff.
How to pronounce "Ubuntu" you guys?
You may find the exact pronunciation by typing ubuntu at youtube. :)
@kelvin,
actually there are ways to make your windoz-based study software run on Linux. For example, via the compatibility layer provided by Wine: http://www.winehq.org/
But installation and configuration may take a bit work. Just use Windoz for your study software for now. Study is most important for you, after all.
Dual boot (install Windoz and Linux in the same box) is also an option. But you really need experience to get everything straight. If you have friends that studies computer science or software eingineering, you may ask help on installation from them. Linux is pretty popular among those students.
Oh yes, some drivers need special libraries (here library means compiled programs). Some requires you to download the source code of the Linux Kernel so that it can build a Kernel module. It's too much for you for now. Like I said, seek for help in your campus if you cannot live without some drivers.
Yes I use the accounting software GNU Cash. It's superb for family book-keeping, you get a good overview of where your money come from and where it goes to. However it's not a magical tool that thinks for you. Lin Sir has tought us that for long-term investment, it's more important to monitor the companies closely, keep informed about all the 108 important ratios, and know how to interpret them correctly. Also important is to know the situation of world economy and regulations in different regions. For these we better turn to financial books but not software such as GNU Cash.
Wish you much success in your study!
@ck and other Linux novices,
In addition to reading Linux books and informing yourself from the web, just use Linux whenever you get a chance. It is important to develop a sense. You don't learn swimming just by listening to lectures, but have to jump into water. Once you've developed a sense for the Linux OS, things are not as complicated as they seem like. Nowadays there is a graphic user interface for just any Linux program. The era of command-line console has gone for most Wheel's reader here. You just click around and get your stuff done, not too much different from the Windoz environment.
Last but not the least: OS is just a bridge, or a layer between applications and the hardware.
For most application developers, it is too inefficient to write software that directly talks to the hardware, so there is a need of OS as an abstraction layer of the Hardware to reduce the complexity of the application development. However for most of Wheel's readers here, it is the applications that really matters, _not_ the OS. If your applications (such as stock price trend plotting program, etc.) run well under your Windoz _and_ switching to Linux may take you a lot of time and energy, then my suggestion would be to stay with your old OS, whatever it is.
It's your decision: invest some time in learning the Linux ecosystem and save money for software licenses or pay for the proprietary software ecosystem and save the learning effort.
Mrs Fay
as i know windows use registry system, when user install and uninstall different softwares, there will be high chance to corrupt the registry, causing the system to be unstable and easy to collapse, also as more DLL add to the system, the windows will become slower in running.
on the other hand, linux os do not have this kind of disadvantage, isn't it?
